School books

Education is a fundamental human right that many children forced to flee are deprived of. Even when there are schools nearby, children often miss out on education because their families cannot afford the necessary supplies, like schoolbooks.

Children fleeing from war and crisis areas are particularly vulnerable. Without access to school, they are at greater risk of being exposed to violence, human trafficking, forced child labour, or being recruited as child soldiers.

Together with our supporters and donors, the Norwegian Refugee Council ensures that more than one million children receive help with their education every year:

• We build classrooms
• We train teachers
• We provide psychosocial support
• We distribute schoolbooks and other materials

Schooling makes children's daily lives more stable and secure. At school, they learn to write, read, and do math. They also learn how to process war-related trauma and difficult thoughts and experiences.
